THE BOSTON TEA PARTY DIDN’T HAPPEN HERE.   BUT IT COULD HAVE.

Because the site of The 1850 was once water, part of the old South Bay, along whose banks were built many of the wharves and warehouses that made Boston a great maritime city.  Only a narrow neck of land along what is now Washington Street separated Boston from the mainland.

The South Bay was gradually filled in during the 19th century, but the area remained a working neighborhood.  Our building, constructed between 1887 and 1889 on landfill created in 1850, has been home to a piano factory, a hardware manufacturer and warehousing companies for more than 100 years.  The 1850’s story is the stuff of which America is made—enterprise, expansion and adaptation.

The latest adaptation has now created an exciting option for those who love the honesty of industrial buildings, who want to live where the city works, and experience real city living.  George Washington didn’t sleep here, but you can.

HISTORY WITH ATTITUDE

That’s The 1850.  Old, but not quaint.  Bricks, but not bow fronts.  Take an historic South End factory.  Remove the machines, but leave in the character, and add a great big dose of clean, contemporary design.  Put it in a neighborhood that works for a living, yet lets you walk to great restaurants, transportation and leisure venues.  When you combine old Boston history with new South End energy, the results can be wonderful.   Welcome to the high-style, high-value condominiums of The 1850.
